In 1921, Mr and Mrs WJ Hawkins (Snr) owned a small general store in Islandmagee, Northern Ireland -
The Gobbins Store (named after the prominent local landmark). It was here that the soon-to-be famous home-made Rinkha ice cream recipe was conceived. In those days wooden churns were used and turned by hand - it was very hard work! Anyone who helped out by turning the handle was rewarded with free ice cream! It will come as no surprise that there was no shortage of volunteers among the local Islandmagee children. |
